Police Cracking Down On Rogue Cyclists

Police are launching a crackdown on rogue riders who don’t follow the rules of the road. Bike cops will be on patrol through Center City and Rittenhouse Square in search of cyclists who break the law.

Tickets remain rare in San Francisco, although ridership is up 53 percent since 2006, and with that boom has come a fairly rampant disregard for the rules of the road. Stop signs (and sometimes red lights) are routinely ignored.

Videotape a typical intersection and do the math. A scan of 40 minutes of footage shot during morning rush hour at the four-way stop of Duboce and Steiner Streets showed the following:

¶Seven cyclists came to a complete stop.

¶Fifteen cyclists paused.

¶Ninety-one cyclists blew right through the intersection.

A two-wheeled commuter between his Brighton home and school, Devereaux considers himself a conscientious rider. But he said his maneuver at Beacon and Harvard streets was typical of urban cyclists, who tend to judge the safety of an intersection separately each time they approach it.

Tampa council repeals bicycle bell law

Tampa police arrested nine people for riding a bike without a bell in 2008, city records indicate, but nobody has been arrested for the offense since the appeals court ruling.

Dallas police insist the bike helmet law is strictly about safety, but, Ean Parsons, owner of the Oak Cliff Bicycle Company isn’t buying it. “It gives the police reason to pull people over,” Parsons said. “You know, to shake ‘em down and see if they are doing something illegal.”

Ean Parsons sounds like a typical cyclist!

State of Minnesota – Bicycle Laws

It’s quite apparent to me that many, many cyclists in my area don’t know the laws of the State of Minnesota, regarding bicycle travel.

Here’s one of my favorites from MN State Statute 169.222:

Subd. 4. Riding on roadway or shoulder. (a) Every
person operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as close as
practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except
under any of the following situations:

I may start carrying copies of the Minnesota bike laws in my truck, would have come in handy the other day when two jerks were taking up the entire lane and didn’t bother to move over. (If you were headed south on Cty Rd. 19 last Sunday, around 1:00pm, then a big F U to you and your buddy.)
